I'm in a New Testament class this semester and along with the reading we are to share a brief summary of what we learned. Here's one of mine.:
Mark 20:17-34 and Mark 10:32-52. The Savior has a teaching method that's prominent through all of the scriptures. He always asks us, "What would you have me do?" Is. 45:11- Command ye me.
It used to bug me when I would come to a teacher with a question and then they'd answer with a question. In reality, they were gently guiding me to my answer, making me think and work for it. Otherwise I probably would appreciate the answer. After I left grade school, I realized they were the best kind of teachers.
Christ is no different. When we come to him with a problem or request, I imagine a dialogue that goes something like this.
Lord: Okay, I understand the situation and I'm glad you came to me. Now, what would you have me do?
Me: Do? Getting rid of the situation would be nice.
Lord: Hmm, try again. Think this time.
Me: Is this one of those experiences that will be for my good?
Lord: You're getting warmer.
Me: And I HAVE to go through it?
Lord: That's right.
Me: Well, then I guess all I can ask is give me strength to get through, an eternal perspective so I won't get discouraged, a humble heart so I won't become bitter, a friend to help me up when I fall, and a little reminder that you love me and that I CAN do this.
Lord: You're learning.
And me with all of my imperfect insecurities will ask:
Me: Promise you won't forget me?
Lord: Even when you, for a moment, have forgotten me, "I will not forget thee … Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me." Is. 49:16
